New Westlake Village Animal Hospital & Barkley Pet Hotel Under Construction The new development consisting of the Westlake Village Animal Hospital and the Barkley Pet Hotel & Day Spa are under construction at 31166 Via Colinas. The project is expected to take around 6 months to complete. The building had to be gutted and stripped of all previous electrical and plumbing fixtures, pipes, as well as air conditioning ducts and wiring. New walls are being erected out of metal while trenching for new plumbing is also being done. Skylights throughout the building are being installed as an energy saver. The animal hospital will have its own emergency generator in case of blackouts. You may sign up for 'Prefurd' email at www.westlakepethotel.com and you will receive regular updates on our progress.
The Barkley Pet Hotel & Day Spa has erected a freeway sign located on the 101 freeway going north just south of Kanan Rd. The sign has been leased for a year. Since the sign went up the phones have been ringing off the hook and the emails have been coming in a steady stream. The sign does say “Coming Soon Summer 2010” however, if you are driving 70 miles per hour you might only see the sign with the pretty graphics along with the website and phone number. The hotel, The Barkley Pet Hotel & Day Spa, is a luxury style pet resort known nationally as America’s premier pet care facility. Alongside the hotel will be Westlake Village Animal Hospital, where two of the areas top veterinary professionals will combine their experience and expertise to help accomplish one common goal. Westlake Village officials recognized that this all-in-one pet care campus will provide pet owners resources previously unavailable and have praised the developers for an outstanding concept to enhance the business community.
As for the pet hotel, Slaton states, “When you see this facility, you will want to stay here yourself! Your pets may not want to go home.” That is because the 18,600 square foot Barkley Pet Hotel & Day Spa will truly be a vacation destination for pets - combining homelike amenities with plenty of fun-filled recreational activity. The Barkley will house approximately 200 dogs and 40 cats along with special facilities for birds and exotics. The Barkley will be a 24-hour facility and will be designed and operated to meet and exceed all current industry standards.
Doctor Slaton -- to the Rescue!By Carole Raphaelle Davis
Too many animals are surrendered to shelters because of medical problems and sadly, those who need medical attention have little chance of being adopted. Few people want to start off a relationship with a new pet who needs to go directly to the hospital. Dr. Slaton, who graduated from Ross veterinary school in St. Kitts in 2003, wanted to build a reputation by helping out with rescue groups. He helps small rescue organizations that pull animals from the shelters' kill list by offering a reduced rate. Dr. Slaton has a rescued dog of his own, a little Chihuahua who had been attacked by another dog. "She was brought in by a local rescue. She had broken ribs and a large abscess and I fixed her up." said Dr. Slaton, continuing, "I'm not a big Chihuahua fan but I sort of fell in love with her. I named her Beanz like a little coffee bean." He also has an English Mastiff he named Disco acquired eleven years ago from a breeder. "That was before I realized how many unwanted dogs were available," he said. Asked if there is a particular medical rescue case that stands out in his mind, he told me about a five month old puppy--a Chihuahua mix that was an abuse case. The dog was paraparetic which means he couldn't use his rear legs. "I was asked if I could do spinal surgery because he had a fractured spine--a vertebral fracture," said Dr. Slaton. "It was his only chance." Thanks to Doctor Slaton, that little dog got his chance--he's in recovery now and is beginning to walk. Soon, he will be ready for adoption into a loving home. WVAH introduces "Pet Friendly" van to the Conejo Valley. WVAH Upgrades to digital radiography. On February 12, 2009, Westlake Village Animal Hospital installed a new, state of the art, Sound Technologies digital radiography (X-ray) machine that will provide instant x-rays with much greater detail and contrast. This will enable Dr. Slaton to provide our clients a more detailed analysis of any internal injuries. We will be able to share these x-ray results with our clients by viewing them in the exam rooms with the newly installed 25 inch monitors and computers or by emailing them to you. In addition, WVAH has added its own digital ultrasound machine made by GE. This enables Dr. Slaton to view soft tissue and organs that otherwise cannot be seen with X-ray. The ultrasound recently allowed Dr. Slaton to determine that a black lab swallowed a toy mouse which became stuck in the small intestines. Immediate surgery to remove the toy animal prevented further complications that may have resulted in a much more costly procedure or loss of the animal's life. |
